Du Yun Mao Jian (都匀毛尖, Dū Yún Máo Jiān) is a kind of Chinese green tea and is one of the top 10 famous Chinese tea.
Du Yun Mao Jian is native to the Duyun City of Guizhou Province. It is also a national geographic indication product of China and is one of the top 3 famous teas in Guizhou Province.
Du Yun Mao Jian is also called “fishhook tea” or “bird’s tongue tea” because the tea leaves are curled like fishhook or bird’s tongue. The name “Du Yun Mao Jian” is named by Chairman Mao in 1956.

History of Du Yun Mao Jian
According to historical records, as early as the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the predecessor of Du Yun Mao Jian is called “fishhook tea” and it was regarded as a royal tribute tea. By the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912), fishhook tea began to be exported abroad.
In 1956, Duyun municipal government sent fishhook tea to Chairman Mao. Shortly afterward, the local government received a letter from Chairman Mao. The letter said, “The tea is very good. In the future, you should grow more this kind of tea on the hillside. The tea can be named ‘Maojian’.” Later, Chairman Mao also wrote a poem to praise Du Yun Mao Jian.
The “Mao” of “Maojian” means “Hair” because the Maojian tea leaves are covered with a layer of white hairs.
In 1972, Du Yun Mao Jian was sold to Japan for the first time and was welcomed by Japanese customers.
In June 1982, Du Yun Mao Jian ranked second after Nanjing Yuhua tea in the evaluation of famous green tea in China. In the same year, it was awarded one of the top 10 famous Chinese tea.
Afterward, Du Yun Mao Jian continuously won many awards as a high-quality green tea in many competitions and expositions.
On December 12, 2016, Du Yun Mao Jian ranked fourth in the list of tea brand value at the “Information Conference of Chinese Brand Value Evaluation 2016”.
In recent years, the development of Du Yun Mao Jian is inseparable from good policies. The local government had issued a series of policies to promote the tea industry and implemented legislative protection around the goal of “developing industry of tea, benefiting the people with tea, and cultivating culture with tea” so that Du Yun Mao Jian has embarked on the development road of scale, standardization and branding.
Growth Environment of Du Yun Mao Jian
Duyun City is located in the south of Guizhou Province. It has a mild climate, warm in winter and cool in summer, suitable for travel and vacation.
Duyun City has a subtropical humid monsoon climate; the valleys are undulating; the altitude is more than 1,000 meters; trees are lush; clouds and mists are pervasive; the four seasons are pleasant; the annual average temperature is 16℃.
In addition, the soil layer is deep, loose, moist, acidic, containing a lot of iron and phosphate. These special natural conditions are very suitable for the growth of tea trees.
Characteristics of Du Yun Mao Jian
The picking period of Du Yun Mao Jian is from the beginning of March to the beginning of May. The picking standard of the fresh leaves is single- bud or one bud with one leaf and the length of it should not be more than 2.0cm. Generally, it will take about 53k-56k buds to make 500g of special-grade Du Yun Mao Jian.
The appearance of Du Yun Mao Jian is fine, smooth, with green color and white hairs. It has a long-lasting fragrance and mellow taste. The tea liquid is clear and bright.
Du Yun Mao Jian has the characteristics of “three yellow in green”. The color of dried tea leaves is yellow-green; the tea liquid is yellow-green; the color of brewed tea leaves is yellow-green.
